League Matches
Definition:
A league match takes place between schools in York county that choose to
participate in the York County Youth wrestling league. The intent of the league
program is to provide the opportunity to wrestle kids of the same
approximate weight and skill level from other participating
schools during the season. The wrestler must wear the official Dover
issued singlet for Saturday league matches. The coaching staff will keep track
of weight and skill level and be responsible for setting up league matches the
Friday night before a Saturday league match. The coaching staff will ideally
set up 2 matches per wrestler. The wrestler will advance to the next match
weather they win or loose so they gain experience and mat time. A member of the
coaching staff will be at mat side to coach your wrestler during the match. The
matches will be refereed by a PIAA certified referee and will involve three
1-minute periods plus two 30 second overtime periods if needed. Only one parent
or guardian is allowed to be mat side with the coach. The YCYWL rules allow two
people per mat corner. The win \ loss record is tracked for seeding purposes at
the York County league tournament (see tournament definition)
which takes place at the end of the season. Trophies are not awarded at league
matches. It is important that you commit to having your wrestler to the
school hosting the league match on time! A great deal of effort and work
goes into setting up the matches. If your wrestler will not be attending the
league match, please notify the head coach.
Wrestlers and Parents:
1)
The Dover Youth Wrestling Club pays for the cost or fee for participating
in the league at the beginning of the season.
2)
We will assume that your
wrestler is participating in the league matches. It is your responsibility
to notify your wrestler’s head coach if you are not going to be able to
participate in the scheduled league match before the last scheduled practice
prior to a Saturday league match. If you fail to give the expected notice,
Your wrestler will be pulled from the league and only allowed to participate in
the regularly scheduled weekly practices.
3)
The coaching staff will periodically check the weight of your wrestler.
You are not required to have your wrestler’s weight checked Friday night or
Saturday morning prior to a league match. The coaching staff will monitor
weight during normal practice sessions.
4) Matches begin at
9:00am, Wrestlers MUST be at the hosting school by 8:30 a.m. to
receive their bout numbers and to warm up.
5) After you wrestle your
last bout number, you may leave. Generally, a league match will last 3 hours.
6) Reminder if you can’t make it to the match give Your
wrestler’s head coach a call or Mark Becker at 717/792-6895.
7) A listing of dates, times, and directions to

Tournaments
Definition: A
tournament typically follows the same rules and regulations, as does the York
County Youth Wrestling league unless otherwise specified. The intent of a
tournament is to allow wrestlers to fine tune skills and compete against
athletes within precise age and weight brackets.
It is your responsibility to register your wrestler in a tournament and
pay the specified entry fees. It is
also your responsibility to have your wrestler officially weighed at the hosting
school during the times specified on the tournament entry sheet.
You must complete the entry sheet and register your wrestler in the correct age
bracket and weight bracket. Carefully choose a weight bracket that is realistic
and healthy for your wrestler. Typical weigh-in hours are Friday night between
6pm and 8pm and or Saturday morning between 7am and 8am. You could be challenged
to verify age with a birth certificate. It is recommended to keep a copy handy.
Tournaments are refereed by a PIAA certified referee and will involve three
1-minute periods plus two 30 second overtime periods if needed. Only one parent
or guardian is allowed to be mat side with the coach.
Most all tournaments award trophies to the top
4 finishers in each weight bracket. Many of our coaches do not attend
tournaments. A Dover Youth wrestling coach will be mat side at tournaments when
available. Several variations exist with operating tournaments. You need to
check the rules and regulations to understand if it is single or double
elimination. The Dover Youth Wrestling club will participate in several York
County tournaments throughout the season. Wrestling in a tournament is a
personal decision that should be made with the parent, the wrestler and his
coach. Most tournaments are considered “open” and attract outstanding wrestlers
from within and outside the state. You should expect competition to be very
competitive. You want to make sure your wrestler is ready for this level of
competition.
Wrestlers and Parents:
1)
It is your responsibility to
register for tournaments and pay the fees.
You must complete the entire registration process and make sure the weight
bracket is obtainable for the wrestler at the official weigh-in time.
2)
You must take your wrestler to the hosting school and have his weight
officially validated either Friday night or Saturday morning.
This must be done at the hosting school during the times stated on the
registration form.
3)
If your wrestler fails to make weight or misses his bout call, he will be
disqualified. The entry fee for the tournament is typically non-refundable and
ranges from 10.00 to 15.00 dollars.
4)
The coaching staff can answer questions or help with completing
tournament entry forms upon request.
